Our Endorsement of Boston Mayor Walsh

In our first ever endorsement in a mayoral race, the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts is proud to endorse Boston Mayor Marty Walsh for re-election

Mayor Walsh fights for all Bostonians. He believes health care access, reproductive rights, and equality build the foundation for healthy communities and he has the track record to prove it.  With Mayor Walsh at the helm, our city will continue to stand strong even under this national political climate.

Mayor Walsh Protects Safe Access to Reproductive Health Care for Bostonians

  • When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the state’s buffer zone law, Mayor Walsh immediately worked with Planned Parenthood health centers and law enforcement to ensure patients and staff could continue entering reproductive health centers, like Planned Parenthood, without fear of intimidation or harassment.
  • Mayor Walsh also advocated for quick passage of the Safe Access Law, which enhanced existing laws and created new ones that promote public safety at and around reproductive health care facilities in Massachusetts.
  • His office has opposed “crisis pregnancy centers” in Boston, and has asked neighborhood associations to oppose the expansion of facilities that provide medically inaccurate and coercive information to pregnant women.

Mayor Walsh Fights Back Against National Attacks on Reproductive Rights

At a time when national politics are targeting communities already facing barriers to care and achievement, Mayor Walsh has been a vocal contrast to this toxic environment.

  • When D.C. politicians tried to “defund” Planned Parenthood, Mayor Walsh joined more than 100 mayors from across the country to explain the critical role Planned Parenthood health centers play in their communities and urge congressional leadership to reject efforts that block access to care at Planned Parenthood health centers.
  • Under his leadership, the City of Boston was one of 7 cities and one county that submitted an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court opposing the harmful, medically unnecessary, and ultimately unconstitutional abortion restrictions challenged in the Whole Women’s Health case.
  • When President Trump suggested women could simply travel to other states for abortion services if Roe v. Wade is overturned, Mayor Walsh rightfully called such a notion “absurd” and vowed to protect access to safe, legal abortion in Boston.

Mayor Walsh Dismantles Barriers to Sexual and Reproductive Health Care

Mayor Walsh supports smart, proactive policies on the city and state level that equip residents with the information and resources they need to stay healthy and lead fulfilling lives.

  • Mayor Walsh has committed Boston to the Fast-Track Cities Initiative, an international commitment to put concrete policies in place that are aimed at ending the AIDS epidemic.
    • He has committed to taking the steps needed to ensure that by 2020, 90 percent of Boston residents living with HIV are aware of their status, 90 percent of those diagnosed with HIV receive treatment with antiretroviral therapy, and 90 percent of those in treatment achieve “viral suppression”— meaning they cannot transmit the virus to others.
  • Mayor Walsh has worked with state lawmakers in support of legislation to increase access to long-acting reversible contraceptives.
  • Mayor Walsh supports state legislation that expands access to birth control and comprehensive sex education, and his office has testified in support of the Healthy Youth Act in the past.
