The special election primary is scheduled for May 2, 2023

BOSTON – Today, the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) endorsed John Moran for state representative in the 9th Suffolk district special election, backing a candidate who will fight for LGBTQ+ rights, abortion access, racial justice, housing equity, and people affected by the opioid crisis in his district. If elected, Moran would be the first openly gay man elected to represent this district.

“John Moran has a strong vision and commitment to policy and community-driven solutions that will advance healthy equity and protect people’s civil rights and reproductive freedoms. This leadership is desperately needed at a time when reproductive and gender-affirming health care are under unprecedented attack, and in a district that is home to tremendous diversity as well as serious systemic inequities,” said Nate Horwitz-Willis, executive director of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of MA. "We are confident John will be a champion for reproductive freedom and the right of all people to access the health care they deserve, regardless of their identity, income, or zip code."

“I am proud to earn the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund endorsement,” said John Moran. “The fight for reproductive freedom and equity is on the line in America. As an openly gay man, I understand deeply what it’s like to have my rights on the line. If I am elected to represent the 9th Suffolk district on Beacon Hill, I promise to keep Massachusetts a sanctuary state for abortion care.”

About PPAF:

The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) is the advocacy and political arm of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) and works to elect leaders who will be champions for accessible, equitable sexual and reproductive health care and reproductive rights. Formed in 1984, PPAF believes that working within the political process is critical to advancing PPLM’s mission to increase access to sexual and reproductive health services and comprehensive sex education across Massachusetts.

PPAF endorses candidates who have a strong record in supporting sexual and reproductive health access and who will continue to prioritize the health and wellbeing of Planned Parenthood patients in the face of unprecedented attacks on bodily autonomy and the most severe restrictions on sexual and reproductive health care in 50 years. While the right to abortion is protected in Massachusetts under the ROE Act, PPAF’s legislative priorities focus on improving patient care and maternal health outcomes, expanding access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care, and advancing health equity.

To earn PPAF’s endorsement, candidates must fill-out a questionnaire that evaluates their support for PPAF’s legislative priorities and win a two-thirds vote from the PPAF Board.
