BOSTON – This evening, the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) granted a stay on the lower courts’ decisions in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which keeps the current status of mifepristone, one of two medications used in the most effective medication abortion regimen, intact.
“Mifepristone is indisputably a safe and effective medication and a standard part of reproductive health care for abortion, miscarriage management, and much more. Any effort to ban or restrict mifepristone has no basis in science or interest in public health, and is a baseless, politically motivated attempt to restrict abortion access in every state,” said Ellen Frank, interim president and CEO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. “Medication abortion is essential health care that helps patients to manage their abortion safely, on their own terms. Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts is proud to be the leading provider of this care in Massachusetts and will continue to do everything we can to ensure patients can access abortion care with as few barriers as possible.”
Medication abortion is safe, effective, and common. Since the FDA approved mifepristone in 2000, it has been used by more than five million people to safely and effectively end a pregnancy. Currently, more than half of abortions nationwide – and nearly half of abortions in Massachusetts – are medication abortions, most commonly with a two-step regimen of mifepristone and misoprostol, that can be administered during the first trimester of pregnancy.
