PPAA’s 2020 Candidate Endorsements: Your Local Progressives

The adage “all politics is local'' can be easily associated with Arizona. It is local officials who are keeping our society running, even in the midst of this ongoing global pandemic. Dedicated to ensuring that justice prevails in Arizona, attorneys Will Knight, of Maricopa County, and  Laura Conover, of Pima County, are incredible public servants. They have been fighting for real criminal justice reform, striving to protect Arizonan’s abortion access, environmental health, and the progressive values we strive for. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona is appreciative of both attorney’s battles for progressive victories and we are proud to endorse both Knight and Conover for election in crowded County AttorneyDemocratic primaries on August 4th.

PPAA’s 2020 Candidate Endorsements: Supporting Progressive Democrats

Arizonans understand that their state is the front line in the battle against Donald Trump, Martha McSally, and the conservative agenda, but heroes of reproductive justice are being targeted from inside the Democratic Party as well. Democratic primary challengers from the right are attempting to incapacitate the movement for reproductive health and abortion access in Arizona and voters must rally behind legislators who support our cause. Over the coming weeks, we will be highlighting our endorsed legislators who face a primary challenge on August 4th, and why it is critical that they have our support. Representative Diego Rodriguez and Melody Hernandez have been fighting for progressive causes and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona is proud to endorse Rodriguez for reelection and Hernandez for election.

PPAA’s 2020 Candidate Endorsements: Communities in Pain

The sadness and pain felt by communities all across America - particularly Black communities - in recent weeks is a stark reminder that we need elected leaders committed to making lasting systemic change. Two of our endorsed candidates, House Minority Leader Charlene Fernandez and Representative Reginald Bolding, understand that leadership is based on listening, and they have been listening and acting on the needs of Arizonans since 2014. Our state needs them now more than ever.

PPAA’s 2020 Candidate Endorsements: We Support candidates who support you

It’s hard to believe, but elections are just around the corner, and the COVID-19 pandemic has been a stark reminder of how much elections matter - from the top of the ticket to the bottom. Electing legislators that will fight for access to reproductive health care and for all the communities that too often face systemic barriers to care has never been more important. That is why Planned Parent Advocates of Arizona is thrilled to announce our first set of 2020 legislative endorsements.

The Fight for Equality and Inclusion in Sports Continues in Arizona

Sports can often teach character traits outside the classroom: good sportsmanship, being a gracious loser and a humble winner, and the importance of fairness and contributing to a team. Participating in sports can be a powerful way to hone physical agility, mental resiliency, and personal identity. For kids, it’s a way to learn teamwork, sportsmanship, and the endless potential that can be unearthed when goal-focused individuals come together and execute a winning plan.

What’s the 411 on 2-1-1 Bills?

Hello, 911? I’d like to report a dumpster fire.

Anti-abortion politicians are at it again — this time targeting the 2-1-1 referral system as a pretext for charging the taxpayers $3 million to fund a pilot program to promote childbirth instead of abortion. The 2-1-1 system is a statewide information and referral network that has been in service since 1964, with more than 80% of calls regarding public utility inquiries.

Yes, Virginia, Local Elections Do Matter

Virginia is a political beast of a state. Once the capital of the Confederacy and current home to the National Rifle Association, Virginia sports 13 lucky electoral votes (only two more than Arizona), and has served as a training ground for many organizers learning how to make a red state blue. When activists take a tobacco-growing, gun-toting Southern capital and organize it to recognize the humanity and equality of their citizens, they provide inspiration — and a proof of principle — to other organizers nationwide that the seemingly impossible is quite possible.
