A draft U.S. Supreme Court majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was leaked on May 3, 2022. The draft explicitly calls for Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey to be overruled, obliterating federal protections for abortion.

Abortion is still legal today, but the leak from the Supreme Court makes it clear that our deepest fears are coming true: the Court seems prepared to end the constitutional right to abortion.

We are facing a future where individual states have the power to legislate and restrict abortion. While Iowa currently has state protections for abortion access, the majority in the Iowa House and Senate are pushing a constitutional amendment that would strip Iowans of their right to safe, legal abortion. We cannot rely on the courts to protect us.

We have overcome daunting challenges before, and we will do it again.

Here are 9 ways you can fight back now.

1. Attend a rally near you.

In this critical moment, we are coming together to raise our voices and build solidarity with one another. Together, we will make clear: Iowans need abortion access, and we will fight like hell to protect safe, legal abortion in our state.

2. Join us for Empower Hour on May 13th.

We will be hosting intimate gatherings of storytellers and supporters to cultivate community and grow solidarity among advocates in Iowa on May 13.  Join us in West Des Moines, Iowa City, or Davenport to share your experience with sexual and reproductive health care or come to listen and support others and their stories.

3. Submit a letter to the editor.

People trust others who live in their community. Sharing why this issue matters to you in your local paper can have an incredible impact. Reach out to an organizer in your area, and we’ll  equip you with the tools you need to write a successful letter to the editor, or ask them how to join our virtual LTE Warrior Workshop on May 25.

4. Sign up for email alerts.

Join our email network to receive email alerts on the latest news about reproductive rights in Iowa, upcoming events, and action items as we fight to protect sexual and reproductive health care in Iowa.

5. Volunteer.

Share your time and talent to make a difference in your community.

6. Share your story.

Sharing your story is a critical way to help show your community that Planned Parenthood matters. Whether you are a former patient, sex education participant, or supporter, your story can help demonstrate the importance of Planned Parenthood and bodily autonomy. (You can always share anonymously.)

7. Donate.

Planned Parenthood clinics are open, and they continue to deliver vital sexual and reproductive health care in Iowa.  You can help a patient get the care they need today.

8. Make an Appointment.

You can show your support by making your next reproductive health care appointment at Planned Parenthood and encouraging your friends to do the same.

9. Sign up to be the first to know about upcoming mobilization events.

Planned Parenthood and other organizations across the country, including our team in Iowa, are preparing for the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision from the U.S. Supreme Court. When the final decision is released, we will join together with allies in a show of solidarity and force against attacks on abortion access.
