We are so thankful for the work of Planned Parenthood advocates during the 2021 Iowa legislative session. Together we fought for a safer, healthier, more equitable Iowa. Advocacy during legislative session is critical and the work doesn’t stop when session ends. Staying active year-round is crucial for amplifying all Iowans’ voices and defining the narrative around our most important issues.

That’s why we are excited to introduce the #AdvocateAllYear campaign. Each month we’ll share three ways to stay active in your community, grow your involvement, inspire conversation, and deepen your connection to the causes that matter most to you.

In June, take some time to focus on the community and give yourself the space to recharge after a rather grueling legislative session. Here are three ways to stay involved:

  1. Attend a Pride event. With events now scattered across the whole month of June, you are sure to find one that piques your interest and fits your schedule. If that’s not the case, follow One Iowa on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to stay connected to the LGBTQ+ community in Iowa and learn more about their advocacy.
  2. Find a Juneteenth celebration near you. Several communities are hosting Juneteenth events on June 19 to join in celebration, rest, and solidarity on the anniversary of the day the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their liberation from slavery in 1865—almost two and a half years after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Learn about Juneteenth in Iowa by visiting the official Iowa Juneteenth Celebration site.
  3. Take time to rest and refuel after a difficult legislative session. Sustaining such ferocious activism requires rest. We need you in this fight and you can have the greatest impact when you are charged up and strong. Need inspiration for your self care? Visit the Global Fund for Women’s how to guide.

Thank you for continuing to support Planned Parenthood and #AdvocateAllYear. We hope you come back in July for three new actions to take.
