March 14, 2018 (Des Moines, IA) – Despite what ranking Iowa Representatives reported yesterday, far-right members of the House Human Resources Committee have advanced a dangerous ban on abortion by adding the unpopular and unconstitutional policy as an amendment to SF 359, a bill that regulates the use of fetal tissue.

The new bill was heard in subcommittee today, wherein Rep. Shannon Lundgren and Rep. Sandy Salmon amended the bill to ban abortions as soon as a fetal heartbeat is detected. Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell opposed the amendment and the bill as a whole.

“Today’s actions represent the worst side of politics where elected officials willfully mislead constituents in order to force disastrous health policy through the legislative process. Planned Parenthood, the Board of Regents, the Iowa Medical Society, even the Iowa Catholic Conference – we’ve all shared the facts time and again. The far-right Republicans know full well the dangerous implications of banning safe, legal abortion, and they just don’t care. These lawmakers are playing dirty with women’s health, they’re appealing to a small interest group of extreme individuals, and they will be held accountable,” said Erin Davison-Rippey, public affairs director for Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa.

The bill is eligible to be debated by the full committee tomorrow, March 15, at 2:00 p.m. Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa is encouraging constituents to turn out in opposition to the bill.

“We know that every single House Democrat, most moderate Republicans, and 7 in 10 Iowans do not want this bill. Banning abortion is a waste of time and taxpayer dollars, and the repercussions for women's health would be catastrophic. Planned Parenthood will continue to keep the people of Iowa informed and stay vigilant against any restriction on safe, legal abortion care that extreme lawmakers may try to slip into legislation this session.”
