What National Attacks on Abortion Mean for Iowa
The Threat to Safe, Legal Abortion
Abortion is still safe and legal in Iowa.
On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wade, the decision that established the constitutional right to have an abortion. By overturning nearly 50 years of precedent, the Court has put people’s access to safe and legal abortion in Iowa and across the country in jeopardy.
In 2021, Texas passed S.B. 8, the most extreme abortion ban in our country’s history. The law essentially eliminates access to safe, legal abortion in Texas and other states and municipalities have followed suit with their own version of this law. Iowa could be next.
What does this mean for abortion access in Iowa?
Iowa politicians defunded Planned Parenthood in 2017, decimating the state family planning program and access to contraception. In the 2021 legislative session, despite an outcry of opposition, anti-abortion politicians passed the first hurdle to amend the Iowa Constitution and strip Iowans of their right to safe, legal abortion.
An Iowa Supreme Court case decision released just a week before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe changed how the constitutionality of laws about abortion are interpreted, making it easier for politicians to pass additional abortion restrictions.
Now that Roe has been overturned and the threat of the constitutional amendment lingering, anti-abortion politicians may soon be free to effectively ban safe, legal abortion in our state.
Abortion access is fundamental to health equity.
Attacks on abortion access disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), those with low incomes, and those living in rural areas. People with means will always be able to overcome unnecessary barriers to access abortion, but all people should have access to the health care they need.
