As Secretary of State, Brunner worked endlessly to update Ohio’s purposefully outdated voting system. In 2008, she earned a Profile in Courage Award for her reform of the voting system.
Brunner is used to taking over after Republican control. When she was the first woman elected as Ohio Secretary of State, she took over after sixteen years of Republican control.
As a part of Brunner’s private practice, she served as treasurer of Choice ’90, a political action committee that ran television commercials about the abortion positions of the 1990 Ohio’s gubernatorial candidates.
Additionally, Brunner believes that justice begins with each of us. When we seek justice, we must first examine our minds and our hearts. She believes that justice involves lifting our shared history, hopes and visions for our future, respecting one another amidst our great diversity—and tolerance rooted in love. The result always will be greater than the sum of its parts. Brunner believes that one of the greatest joys of public service is when this magic happens.
