Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio Newly Elected Champions

Congratulations to all of the Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio endorsed candidates who won their races!

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown

"Planned Parenthood health centers provide affordable health care, education, and support to thousands of Ohio women and families — a lifeline to many Ohioans who have nowhere else to turn for access to quality care. Thank you to Planned Parenthood Action Fund for your ongoing work advocating on behalf of these families, and for your support of my reelection. Together, we will continue to fight for affordable health care options for all Ohioans and protect the right of women to make their own health care decisions."

Congresswoman Joyce Beatty for the OH03 Congressional District

"All Americans should have access to affordable, high-quality health care, and I will continue to work hard to make it a reality by strenghtening and improving on the Affordable Care Act. I will also continue supporting federal investment in groundbreaking medical research, as well as life-saving therapies and technologies to ensure the health and well-being of generations of Americans."

Congresswoman Marcia Fudge for the OH11 Congressional District

"Ensuring our children have an opportunity to succeed is important to every parent.  Making sure they are healthy enough to enjoy a long, productive life is a large part of the equation."

Congressman Tim Ryan for the OH13 Congressional District

"For the first time in decades, the United States has seen a drop in life expectancy. This is extremely troubling and emphasizes the need for our country to take a hard look on the health and wellness of our citizens. We need to increase access to health care for all Americans, improve preventative health, and make the necessary investments into research and development on how to combat diseases."

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio Endorsed Ohio Newly Elected Senate Champions:

Senator Cecil Thomas for District 9

"Planned Parenthood provides high quality, afforable health care. In additional to family planning, it's clinics provides general health care, excellent sex education, emergency contraception, HIV, and other sexually transmitted disease services. It also provides high quality health care for LBGT patients. Cutting services to these clinics removes from the community a vitial service. I strongly believe that a person's decision regarding family planning or health should be left up to the individual and their doctor. It has no place in the legislature."

Senator Michael Skindell for
District 13

At the Statehouse, Senator Skindell has advocated for greater consumer protection, affordable prescription drugs and utility costs, preserving the environment, economic opportunities for working families and the poor, universal health care and the development of Ohio's renewable energy resources. He played a key role in crafting the 2007-2008 budget that passed with just one dissenting vote. Senator Skindell has served as Chairman of the Joint Commission on Agency Rule Review and as Vice Chair of the Ohio House Consumer and Economic Protection Committee. He also served as a member of the Civil and Commercial Law Committee, the Finance Committee and its Transportation Subcommittee and the Judiciary Committee.

Representative Nickie Antonio for District 23

“For the last 8 years I have been a champion for reproductive rights and justice in the General Assembly and continue to raise my voice in opposition to any restrictions to a woman’s constitutional right to privacy and the right to access reproductive health care. I will continue to trust women and stand strong with the women of Ohio.”

Senator Sandra Williams for District 21

"For over forty years, multiple Supreme Court decisions have consistently reaffirmed a woman’s right to make the personal decision to end a pregnancy and continue by saying that states cannot prohibit common abortion methods. As a State Legislator I have fought tirelessly against the regressive Legislative attacks on women and their physicians. I wholeheartedly support and encourage the mental health and well-being of women. I continually fight for a woman’s right to access medical procedures that they and their doctors deem necessary. I support Planned Parenthood because it is a vital organization which provide numerous invaluable resources to women."

Senator Kenny Yuko for District 25

"I have proudly stood beside Planned Parenthood - at rallies, in my office, in both committee and on the senate floor, and most importantly, with my vote. As a son, grandson, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, you will always have my support."

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio Newly Elected House of Representatives Champions:

Representative Hearcel Craig for District 15

"I believe that all women should have access to high-quality health care. I know that Planned Parenthood works very hard to make sure that all women have that vital access and I thank them for their work on this vital issue."

Phillip Robinson for District 6

“For nearly 100 years, Planned Parenthood continues to serve as a national leader in providing affordable and quality health care for women and men. I support their efforts to ensure all Americans have access to reproductive and sexual health care services.”

Representative Kent Smith for
District 8

"Planned Parenthood is a trusted and reputable Ohio health care provider. They provide cancer screenings, birth control, and complete and medically accurate information about sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, they allow women to make their own reproductive choices by proving constitutionally protected abortion services. Recent data suggests that 46% of Planned Parenthood's Ohio client base is at or below federal poverty guidelines. In other words, half their patient pool can least afford health care offered to them through Planned Parenthood. I am proud to stand with Planned Parenthood."

Representative Janine Boyd for District 9

“More than half of Planned Parenthood’s patients have income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level, and more than half of Planned Parenthood facilities are in medically underserved communities. Unlike most health care facilities, Planned Parenthood offers same-day appointments, longer hours, and weekend services, making access to preventive health care easier for people who work nontraditional or long hours. To me, the political attack on Planned Parenthood is not about abortion, when you consider these facts. I stand with Planned Parenthood, and I stand with the men and women who need their services most.”

Representative Teresa Fedor for District 11

"I will continue to fight to protect women’s health care and ensure that women, especially those that are most vulnerable, receive the care they need. Thank you to Planned Parenthood for our partnership in protecting Ohio's women and families.”

Terrence Upchurch for District 10

Business specialist Terrence Upchurch won an eight-person primary for the 10 House District by 30 percent of the vote. Mr. Upchurch will likely be the next 10 House District Representative, as there is no Republican challenger in the general election.

Representative Stephanie Howse for District 11

"I support Planned Parenthood because they are committed to providing quality and affordable health care for women and men, focusing on reproductive and sexual health care services."

Juanita Brent for District 12

Juanita Brent won a four-way primary. Ms. Brent will likely be the next 12 House District Representative, as there is no Republican challenger in the general election.

Bride Rose Sweeney for District 14

"Supporting and protecting Planned Parenthood is essential in the fight for providing affordable, accessible, and quality health care. Attacks on Planned Parenthood are usually rooted is misguided and false information, in truth they provide critical health care to not just woman but all Ohioans. I am proud to stand with Planned Parenthood."

Representative Adam Miller for District 17

"Planned Parenthood is a national leader in the fight for women's rights and the integrity of women's personal health care decisions.  In supporting Planned Parenthood and their legislative objectives, we are supporting not just individual freedoms but strong families and safer communities. I'm proud to stand with Planned Parenthood."

Representative Kristin Boggs for District 18

"I stand by Planned Parenthood because they are a trusted resource that provides women with honest, accurate medical information regarding STDs, contraception, and pregnancy.  Nearly every woman I know has at some point relied on Planned Parenthood for health care services, and it scares me to think about how many women wouldn't receive the care they need if Planned Parenthood wasn't there to serve them."

Mary Lightbody for District 19

"Women, men, and young people across Ohio have relied on Planned Parenthood for health screenings, regular care, and access to comprehensive reproductive information and birth control.  Its compassionate and complete range of health services have provided a necessary service to many individuals and families, but particularly, to those who otherwise have limited access to quality care. I proudly support this organization and its many services, and appreciate the contributions of the dedicated doctors, nurses, and volunteers who work there."

Representative Richard Brown for District 20

"Importantly, Planned Parenthood provides women with accurate information about their health decisions, allowing women to take control of and care for their health and well-being. Planned Parenthood supports safe and legal abortion procedures. I too support safe and legal medical procedures and efforts to keep it that way. No man can walk in a woman's shoes when it comes to reproductive decisions that are highly personal, complex, and difficult to make. I support the goal of Planned Parenthood to provide information that helps women amke informed health decisions of the most difficult nature."

Beth Liston for District 21

"Health is important to everyone, not only as individuals, but we are all better off when we have healthy communities. We must take the progress we have made over the last several years and build upon this to ensure that all people have high quality health care. We need to move the conversation beyond partisan talking points, and towards real solutions."

Representative David Leland for District 22

"For over 100 years, Planned Parenthood health centers have provided the full range of reproductive health services, including birth control and family planning, comprehensive sex education, and access to safe, legal abortion.  In Ohio and across the country, one in five women will rely on Planned Parenthood, as the most trusted reproductive health care organization in the world, for health care in her lifetime. Everyone, regardless of income, immigration status, race, sexual orientation, or gender identity, should be able to make decisions about their health and future with dignity and economic security. I am honored to stand with Planned Parenthood and with women across Ohio – as I have throughout my many years of public service.  Women should have the right to make their own decisions about their private, personal health care, without the interference of politicians’ political agendas."

Allison Russo for District 24

"I am proud to stand with Planned Parenthood because it reliably provides a full range of affordable reproductive health services and cancer screening to thousands of Ohio women who might not otherwise be able to obtain this care. Access to quality healthcare and family-planning services is critical to improving the health and well-being of women and their babies and is an essential part of a woman’s economic security. I will always work to ensure that all women have the resources, rights, and respect to make reproductive health decisions that are best for themselves, their families, and their futures."

Erica Crawley for District 26

"As a woman who has received reproductive health care services from Planned Parenthood since 2002 up until as recently as last year, I understand first hand how much this organization is needed in communities throughout the country and especially in underserved areas that already face a disproportionate lower access to health care like the District in which I live in and hope to represent. As a candidate with a Planned Parenthood Surgical Center located within my district, now and when elected, I will advocate for continued funding for comprehensive reproductive health care services. I will work to ensure the public has truthful information about the organization and counter the misrepresentations that are made by some politicians. I will continue to advocate for a woman's right to choose to terminate her pregnancy and will fight against any legislation that attempts to impose unnecessary restrictions on that right or attempts to ban abortions in general."

Jessica Miranda for District 28

“As a woman and mother I am passionate about women’s rights and will ensure that legislation in our statehouse will not determine a woman’s right to choose and a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her own body and health care. Planned Parenthood has educated thousands of women and families who need crucial treatment and screenings in our communities. Keeping this affordable access to our communities will provide a better quality of life for our citizens. I am proud to be a part of the year of the woman and this moment in women’s rights in our history. Let’s take back our statehouse and get more females at the table!"

Representative Brigid Kelly for
District 31

"I'm proud to support a woman's right to make her own choices about her body and her medical care. During my current term, I've opposed restrictions to abortion services, sponsored legislation that would make medically necessary feminine hygeine products exempt from the sales tax (and thereby more accessible to women in our state), and co-sponsored a number of pieces of legislation protecting patients and their access to reproductive care."

Representative Catherine Ingram for District 32

As a public servant, university instructor, realtor, neighborhood leader, mom and grandmother, Catherine knows how much the decisions made in Columbus personally impact all of us. His mother works as an administrator at a University and father works as a painter at a local beverage factory. Sedrick grew up around a host of family and friends, always there to ensure his success.

Representative Emilia Sykes for District 34

Representative Sykes has  worked with health care professionals and colleagues to improve public health, increase access to care, and combat Ohio’s high infant mortality rate. Her passion for social justice extends to issues such as voter rights, criminal justice reform, a more efficient social safety net for struggling Ohioans, and an end to domestic violence.

Representative Tavia Galonski for District 35

"Planned Parenthood represents comprehensive health care for Ohio Families. As such, it serves as the educator and health resource for many who often find it difficult to access quality care. My support of planned parenthood is unequivocal and unwavering."

Casey’s family is his rock and foundation. He wants to raise his daughters to reach their maximum potential, and to give them every opportunity to achieve their dreams. He will be a fighter for his family and yours at the State House.

Representative Fred Strahorn for District 39

“As someone who knows that women are smart enough to make their own reproductive choices and choices about their health, I am appreciative of my recent endorsement from Planned Parenthood. I am thankful they are around to help provide a variety of health care services to women who in some cases might not otherwise receive care.”

Paula Hicks-Hudson for District 44

As the first black female mayor of Toledo, Paula Hicks-Hudson has always exhibited a commitment to empowering and helping people improve their quality of life.

Lisa Sobecki for District 45

“I stand with Planned Parenthood because they were there for me when I didn’t have health care coverage in my late teens.  Planned Parenthood provided me with essential medical service, support, and most of all, compassion.  I stand with women and will protect women’s rights as a representative in the Ohio State House”.

Representative Michael Sheehy for District 46

"In the long time march for women's equality in American society, Planned Parenthood has been at the forefront for the past 100 years. Reproductive freedom is closely tied to freedom in the work palce, government, and society-at-large. Because Planned Parenthood has fought for women's rights and health, I join that fight to protect those rights we have achieved."

Having served on Canton City Council for over ten years, he plans to use his pubic service experience to give a voice to the needs and problems of common, everyday people and local community-based organizations.

Representative Michele Lepore-Hagan for District 58

“Along with defending the right to choose, I share Planned Parenthood’s goal of reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies by ensuring that women everywhere have access to effective and affordable contraceptive services. That is why I am working with Rep. Nickie Antonio to secure passage of HB 248, the Ohio Prevention First Act. This legislation will help prevent unintended pregnancies by significantly enhancing the sexual health curriculum offered in our schools, expanding access to hormonal contraception, and providing additional services to sexual assault victims.”
