Summer 2018 Internship Opportunities

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia is looking for detail oriented self-starters to join our team and lend their talents to strengthen our mission across Virginia. There are opportunities in Richmond, Northern Virginia, Newport News/Hampton, and Virginia Beach. Through PPAV’s internship program, you will not only gain skills pertinent to your specific internship, but also increase your employability through additional professional development opportunities.

The deadline to apply is May 1st.

Purpose: For intern to gain skills and apply them in issue based organizing and become lifelong repro rights and justice advocates.

Outcome: Interns will meaningfully contribute to Planned Parenthood’s strategic goals. Interns have gained key organizing skills and professional development to apply in their next position.

Details: The details of individual internships will differ depending on availability, region, and goals of your Community Organizer. All interns are asked to be available at least 15-30 hours per week. Internships with PPAV are an excellent way to build your resume while gaining valuable organizing experience and making a difference in the fight for reproductive health and rights. All internships are unpaid, but intern-related expenses will be covered.

Start and end dates are to be determined based on academic schedule, if applicable.

We have intern opportunities in the following realms:

Community Organizing:

  • Volunteer recruitment, management, and relationship-building

  • Manage an event (tabling, phonebanking, canvassing, etc.)

  • Plan and execute volunteer trainings

  • Learn how to use NGP VAN


Database Management:

  • Learn how to use NGP VAN

  • Manage databases to track volunteers and activists

  • Database input and maintenance

  • Utilize Hustle to contact and track volunteers, speakers, and supporters



  • Identify and develop strong storytellers

  • Develop own story-of-self

  • 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) social media planning and execution

  • Message development



  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills

  • Respectful of other people's time

  • Work collaboratively toward solutions which generally benefit all involved parties.  

  • Proactively identifies opportunities to assist others and ensures that information is communicated accurately and timely.

  • Behaves honestly and ethically.

  • A demonstrated commitment to and interest in reproductive health care needs/issues

  • Understanding and/or interest in public affairs and advocacy

  • A desire to assume ownership of projects by taking direction and working independently to achieve team goals

  • Intern will work with their PPAV supervisor to develop a regular schedule for the duration of their internship.

  • Must be able to intern flexible hours including some nights and weekends and be willing to travel.
