Senate Confirms Amy Coney Barrett to U.S. Supreme Court in Rushed, Partisan Process Only Eight Days from Election
The partisan confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to Justice Ginsburg’s seat is a Direct Threat to Reproductive Rights
SACRAMENTO – Jodi Hicks, President/CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC), issued the following statement on the U.S. Senate’s 52-48 vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Statement from Jodi Hicks, President/CEO, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California:
“It’s no surprise that Republican U.S. Senators have put politics over public health by confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court just one week before Election Day. As our county continues to battle rising COVID-19 numbers in midst of global pandemic, this whole process has been a complete disregard for our democracy, the legacy of Justice Ginsburg, and the pressing needs of the American people.
“Throughout the nomination hearings, Barrett evaded questions on reproductive health care access, the Affordable Care Act, marriage equality, voting rights, and racial discrimination. But her judicial record, writings, and views are clear: she poses a direct threat to reproductive health and rights, the Affordable Care Act, and more. She is a danger to the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans.
“With Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, 17 abortion-related cases one step from the Supreme Court, and the Affordable Care Act about to be considered, the future of our health care is on the line. California’s current and future leaders must work to ensure health care access is protected within our borders, no matter what happens at the Supreme Court. Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California calls on our state leadership to protect rights and expand—not dismantle—access to critical safety-net services in the coming months. We must continue to fight to ensure California continues to be a place where health care is a right no matter who you are or how much you make.”
