Sexual assault and harassment are still looming large at the Capitol. After being accused of assaulting a woman in Juneau, the House Majority Coalition asked Rep. Zach Fansler (HD 38) to resign. Fansler’s resignation was announced on Friday and will be effective February 12th. Rep. John Lincoln was sworn into the House on Wednesday. Rep. Lincoln replaces Dean Westlake, another Representative who resigned amidst accusations of inappropriate behavior.
Last week, Senator Wilson and Representative Eastman introduced SB 162 and HB 308, respectively. These bills would prohibit Alaska Department of Health and Social Services from granting Title X family planning funds to abortion providers, even though federal law already prohibits these funds from going towards abortions. This is a direct attack on Planned Parenthood, which serves three quarters of all Title X patients in Alaska, and on the state’s family planning safety net.
