Planned Parenthood Statement on HB 300 and Attempts to Criminalize Pregnant People for Abortion
For Immediate Release: Feb. 15, 2023
Frankfort, KY— On Tuesday, Kentucky Rep. Emily Callaway (R) filed House Bill 300, an extreme bill that would impose criminal penalties on pregnant people who seek abortion care. In response, Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates issued a statement.
“Outrage is the only appropriate response to HB 300,” said Tamarra Wieder, Kentucky State Director for Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates. “Kentucky lawmakers are trying to criminalize pregnant people who seek abortion care, no matter the circumstances of their decision. These lawmakers only want to scare patients and push an extremist political agenda. Planned Parenthood will fight with everything we’ve got to defeat this cruel bill.”
All major medical organizations including the ACOG, AMA and APHA oppose the criminalization of individuals during pregnancy, for fear it could cause serious threats to people’s health and the health system itself. Threatening patients with criminal punishment makes people less likely to seek medical help when they need it.
Abortion is common. Nearly one in four women in America will have an abortion by age 45, and every individual’s personal decision about their pregnancy should be respected and valued. Right now, across the commonwealth, people with life-threatening conditions are being denied abortions while politicians deny it’s happening. The majority of Kentuckians have had enough, and they made that clear in the last election with the defeat of Amendment 2. Kentuckians overwhelmingly support access to abortion and do not want politicians interfering in their personal health care decisions, period.
