BOISE, ID — Today, the Idaho legislature heard arguments on HB 374, a bill that masquerades as expanding exemptions to the state’s criminal abortion ban, but instead only serves to further enshrine restrictions to abortion care, including narrowing the rape and incest exemption by only allowing abortion in the case of rape or incest up during a survivor’s 1st trimester of pregnancy.

In response, House Democrats walked out on the chamber proceeding a vote on the floor in protest of the bill and egregious anti-abortion laws in the state.

Statement from Mistie DelliCarpini-Tolman, Idaho State Director of Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates

“We support House Democrats who walked out of the House today in protest of HB 374. The truth is that this bill being brought forward is a direct result of the sloppy, ill-informed lawmaking done by this body just a few years prior. The physicians who testified today shared that these provisions are not enough for them to safely practice medicine in our state and yet our lawmakers pushed this bill forward anyway.

At the expense of the health and safety of Idahoans, it’s clear that lawmakers are incapable of listening to anything other than the sound of their own self-righteousness and pats on each other’s backs. As long as these archaic laws are on the books, the Idaho legislature continue to put people in danger, whether this bill passes or not.”
