ANCHORAGE — Statement from Jessica Cler, Public Affairs Manager at Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii (PPVNH):

“With tonight's announcement of D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals judge Brett Kavanaugh as nominee for the Supreme Court of the United States the future of Roe V Wade is on the line. The president has already established that he’ll only appoint nominees who would “automatically” overturn Roe v. Wade. We take him at his word, and ask our U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Dan Sullivan (R-AK) to oppose this nominee. Throughout 2017, we watched Sen. Murkowski stand up and fight for access to reproductive health care. We are counting on Sen. Murkowski to stand up once again and ensure that people across the country, no matter their zip code or income will have access to a full range of reproductive health care. The right to safe and legal abortion has been law for more than 40 years and we must continue to protect it for future generations.

Judge Kavanaugh has already ruled to limit access to safe, legal abortion — just last year, he used his judicial power to try and prevent a young, undocumented woman in U.S. custody from accessing the safe, legal abortion she requested. He has also ruled against women’s access to birth control. Judge Kavanaugh authored the dissenting opinion in the D.C. Circuit’s 2015 ruling on the Affordable Care Act’s birth control benefit, writing that he believed employers have the right to deny their employees health insurance coverage for birth control.

PPVNH calls on Sen. Murkowski to continue her strong leadership and ensure all people, including people across Alaska have access to basic health care.”
