BOISE, ID — This November, the people of Idaho have more on the line than ever before. The right to safe, legal abortion access was stripped away by extremists in positions of political power and we are now at a crucial inflection point. It is critical to elect strong reproductive rights leaders in Idaho to stop a further erosion of rights including emergency contraception and birth control — both already under attack.

Abortion rights are becoming a key issue in the 2022 midterm elections. The overturning of Roe v. Wade has inspired surges in political participation from pro-abortion rights voters across the country, and Idaho is no exception. Across Idaho, these are four abortion rights champions to watch in 2022.

  • Melissa Wintrow: Wintrow is a strong advocate for people being able to make their own medical decisions, saying after the abortion ban went into place, “Idaho lawmakers need to stay out of our private business, quit violating our private lives, end the government mandates and focus on what the government is supposed to do…” (August 25, 2022)
  • Lauren Necochea: Necochea is not afraid to call out those responsible for the harmful abortion bans in the state, tweeting at Governor Little back in March 2022 and alerting constituents that their representatives would unabashedly allow people to die from pregnancy in August 2022.
  • Rick Just: Just recognizes that the issue of health care is a top concern for Idahoans and is the largest threat to financial stability which affects our most vulnerable populations in Idaho. He has also promised to oppose a disgusting bill to remove abortion ban exceptions including protecting the life of the mother, rape and incest.
  • Ron Taylor: Taylor has vowed to stand up for women and their right to not have government meddling in the relationship between them and their doctor. He understands that candidates like Laurie Lickley can't call themselves "moderate" while also voting for abortion bans.

“This summer has been a huge wake up call for all Idahoans,” said Mistie DelliCarpini-Tolman, Idaho State Director for Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates. “Politicians gleefully and purposefully took away a safe, crucial medical procedure, once again putting their personal views above all without remorse. We’re already seeing the devastating impacts of these bans. The only way for us to fight back is to vote them out of office and out of our doctors’ offices.”
