Kansas Senate Advances Bills Attacking Reproductive and Trans Rights; Expands Taxpayer Funds for Deceptive Anti-Abortion Centers

Despite a resounding win for abortion rights last August and continued cries to protect bodily autonomy, Kansas legislators this week passed several bills out of the Senate that attack a person’s ability to make their own health care decisions, free from government interference. Additionally, lawmakers have prioritized expanding critical taxpayer funds for deceptive anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs), none of which are licensed or regulated by the Kansas Department of Health.

Oklahoma Senate Advances Ban on Gender-Affirming Care for Minors, Denying Best Practice Medical Care for Transgender Youth

Today, Freedom Oklahoma, ACLU of Oklahoma, and Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes call upon the Oklahoma Legislature to stop the advancement of SB 613, a direct attack on transgender youth in Oklahoma. SB 613 would ban best practice medical care for transgender Oklahomans under 18, while threatening medical providers with criminalization, civil action, and license penalties, effectively ending live-saving, gender-affirming care for transgender youth across Oklahoma. This is part of the wave of anti-trans legislation being introduced in state legislatures across the country.

Statement from PPGPV CEO Emily Wales on Proposed National Abortion Ban

Today, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) introduced a nationwide abortion ban, making crystal clear that banning abortion in all 50 states is a top priority for a Republican Congress. The proposal underscores the high stakes in November’s elections. Right now, 16 states have abortion bans in effect — leaving one in three American women without control over their own bodies. Under a national abortion ban, pregnant people in remaining access states would lose their rights as well.

Kansas voters protect abortion access by rejecting constitutional amendment

Tonight, in a definitive statement of support for reproductive freedom in the state, Kansas voters rejected a ballot measure that would have eliminated any right to abortion in the state’s constitution and opened the door to dangerous abortion bans. The vote, which comes just over a month after the U.S. Supreme Court revoked federal abortion rights, demonstrates once again that voters across the country do not want politicians interfering in their health care decisions.
