New York  — Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Votes PAC congratulates Governor Kathy Hochul for becoming the first woman elected to lead the state, along with candidates endorsed by PPGNY Votes PAC who won competitive NYS Senate and Assembly races. These victories preserve New York State’s strong majority of pro-reproductive rights champions in the state legislature. These leaders understand the value of centering sexual and reproductive access and supporting key reproductive justice issues. The outcome of the mid-term elections further indicates that the vast majority of New Yorkers want elected leaders who will defend their reproductive freedom and fundamental human right to sexual and reproductive health care in the wake of ongoing attacks on abortion across the country.

Statement by Dipal Shah, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Votes PAC:

New Yorkers, this win is yours. Support for abortion access made the difference in this election — and your work, your voice, and your power made it happen. Thanks to you, reproductive rights champions will once again take office and bring New York one step closer to expanding abortion access for all. Despite national headwinds, New Yorkers elected and re-elected abortion access champions like Governor Kathy Hochul, Senator-elect Lea Webb, and Senator Michelle Hinchey -- just to name a few -- proving that we won’t back down when politicians come for our freedoms. We are ready to get to work with our elected leaders to fight for reproductive health care, rights, and justice for all.

With more than 80% of people around the country wanting access to abortion care to be legally protected, this year’s elections were crucial in the fight for abortion equity.  Voters consistently rejected the U.S. Supreme Court’s wrongful decision to end the constitutional right to abortion. Again and again, they voted for bodily autonomy.

PPGNY Votes PAC supporters and volunteers worked around the clock to elect reproductive health care champions, including community canvassing, rallying, and GOTV efforts that reached more than 50,000 voters and potential voters.
