March into Action with PPIA

Join Planned Parenthood Illinois Action for a month of advocacy work engaging with the Illinois General Assembly. We are launching a full month of virtual programming, story sharing, and fun ways to take meaningful action!

We will focus on advocating for funding, expansion in health care, cultural competency for LGBTQ health care, and for legislation that will allow nurses to practice across state lines.

We invite you to join us for our virtual events in March (right) and to keep scrolling and take action right now, from the comfort of home!

Why these bills?

Planned Parenthood is devoted to advocating for our patients as whole individuals. And we recognize that when patients visit a Planned Parenthood of Illinois health center, they come in the door with their entire lived experiences.

We’re committed to advocating for the entire patient, not just their health care.

We also work in deep coalition with a number of organizations, many of whom are leading the efforts on these pieces of legislation.

It is important that we show up for their work just as they have been showing up for ours.

Family Planning Funding

In recent years, the Title X Family Planning has faced ongoing political attacks, which has confused patients and removed desperately needed coverage for family planning services. As these political roller coasters continue to affect Illinois families statewide, we must fight to ensure that the program continues.

We’re asking the State of Illinois to commit to strengthening the Family Planning Program and funding. The ability to determine when and how someone decides to start a family impacts so many different aspects of their livesfrom being able to pursue educational degrees and advanced training, to pursuing careers that offer more stability, to being able to simply provide for the children people already have.

The Family Planning Program is a vital piece of Illinois' social safety net and Illinois families need it to be intact and fully funded.

Take action with us! Email your member of the Illinois General Assembly and Governor Pritzker now to tell him how important the family planning program is to you.

Implementation of the Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act

Sponsored by State Senator Ram Villivalam

Last year, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Keeping Youth Safe and Health Act (SB 4049). This Act brought Illinois in line with 29 other states in requiring that personal health and safety education taught in grades K-12 is medically accurate, culturally competent, and inclusive.

Now, it is time to make sure that school districts throughout the state receive the funding that they need in order to implement this important legislation into their school curriculum.

Nurse Licensure Compact Bill
Lead by the Illinois Nurses Association

By 2025, the state is looking at a 14,395 shortfall of nurses. And that’s on top of the current shortage. The Nurse Licensure Compact (SB 2068/HB 4269) is a modern licensure solution for today’s health care, which allows for nurses to practice across state lines in either direct care or telehealth. It would protect Illinois nurses and create more job opportunities.

Why is this important to Planned Parenthood? Planned Parenthood of Illinois sees nearly 70,000 patients each year. As states around Illinois ban access to safe and legal abortion, there’s is a significant and growing need for Illinois providers to be able to deliver quality health care with quality health care professionals. This bill will allow Planned Parenthood of Illinois to staff up and meet the growing need coming our way.

Take action now to support SB 2068/HB 4269.

Health Care for All
Lead by Healthy Illinois

Sponsored by State Representative Delia Ramirez

The ongoing global pandemic has highlighted all the ways in which public health is interdependent: health care access for all ensures the health of all Illinoisans, which is especially important when roughly two in ten Illinoisans are immigrants.

If passed, HB 4437, Healthy Illinois for All, will expand the Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults program.

This would provide comprehensive, affordable health coverage to the remainder of uninsured low-income immigrants in Illinois (approximately 149,000 people).

Being uninsured can delay care and testing, translating into avoidable emergency room visits and hospitalizations, which can then turn into sky-rocketing charity care costs borne primarily by safety-net hospitals.

Health Care Cultural Competency for the LGBTQ Community

Lead by our partners at Equality Illinois (HB 4654)

Sponsors: Rep. Dagmara Avelar and Sen. Ram Villivalam

This initiative would establish cultural competency requirements as part of continuing medical education for a range of health care professionals. Based on available data as well as anecdotal stories, we know there is a real need for health care cultural competency in order to improve patient experiences and outcomes.

This type of education would best equip providers to affirmingly serve their patients, including patients from communities that have historically been excluded from affirming treatment and care. The legislation is the initiative of a working group of organizations that advocate for, support, and affirm LGBTQ people, people living with HIV, people with disabilities, and communities of color.
