This legislative session was memorable for so many reasons, including new laws in support of affordable healthcare, civil rights, voting rights, gender justice, and the environment (we’ve been highlighting them on our Instagram this month if you want to take a look!) and SIX NEW LAWS protecting and increasing access to sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion!
Unfortunately, extremist groups in Maine have launched People’s Veto campaigns to overturn many of the new laws before they can even take effect and begin to help people — including the new law guaranteeing insurance coverage for abortion.
Let’s be clear — the People’s Veto is an attempt to take away safe, legal abortion and does nothing to help Mainers get the care they need.
We’ll be working hard over the coming months to protect safe, legal abortion in Maine.
Want to help? Here are five things you can do right now:
Take the pledge. Opponents have to collect 63,000 signatures by September 18th. Our goal is to collect even more pledges from people who support safe, legal abortion--and to do it first.
Invite your friends and family to take the pledge. Share this link with them.
Make a donation. The opposition is resourced and already out gathering signatures. Your contribution today means we can get the word out to supporters and voters and protect our rights.
Sign up to volunteer. The most valuable thing you can give is your time.
Know what you're signing. Don't sign a petition without reading it thoroughly and if you’re uncertain about what the petition is saying, ask the person for more details. What will the law do if it is passed? Which organization are they with? Trust your gut.
Access to reproductive and sexual health care is essential to living a healthy, successful life. The Maine legislature took a giant step forward this year to ensure that all Mainers, no matter where you live or what kind of insurance you have, can access high quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care — including abortion.
We’re not going to let a few extreme groups take that away.
