Minnesota becomes the first state to codify abortion after the fall of Roe v. Wade

ST. PAUL, MN Today, the Protect Reproductive Options Act (PRO Act) took immediate effect after being signed by Gov. Tim Walz.  The PRO Act codifies reproductive freedom into state law and ensures all Minnesotans are free to make their own reproductive health care decisions, including the right to contraception, the right to fertility treatment, and the right to abortion. This is a double layer of protection that maintains the status quo, to ensure protection against anti-abortion efforts for generations to come.

“Minnesota has become a national leader for reproductive freedom and equity,” said Dr. Traxler, Chief Medical Officer at Planned Parenthood North Central States. “And as states around us continue to restrict reproductive health care, Minnesota’s abortion access will only grow more critical. By passing the PRO Act, we’ve trusted patients and doctors to make decisions, and told people across the country they are welcome here.”

“Today, Minnesota enshrined not just the right to reproductive health into their state code, but their place in history as a leader in the fight for reproductive rights,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “The PRO Act is as inspiring as it is needed, just over a year since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Minnesotans can now rest assured that they will maintain the right to make decisions about their bodies, families, and lives — now, and for the years to come.”
