The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee began confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Tuesday, September 4. Donald Trump has made clear that his Supreme Court nominee would overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that affirmed the constitutional right to access abortion in this country. In fact, just last year, as a federal circuit judge, Kavanaugh ruled to limit access to safe, legal abortion.

Karin Housley, who is running for the U.S. Senate against Senator Tina Smith, rushed to support Kavanaugh’s nomination. Housley, who has criticized Senator Smith for her work with Planned Parenthood, has been endorsed by the leading local and national pro-life groups. In the Minnesota state Senate, Housley supported four different bills that ban or restrict abortion access—and she co-authored two of them herself.

Statement from Tim Stanley, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund:

“Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court puts our constitutional rights on the line, including access to abortion. It’s no surprise that Karin Housley has lined up to support him. She shares his backwards vision to block women from making their own, personal health care decisions. That’s not going to fly this November. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is running our largest midterm election program ever to educate voters about what’s at stake in the Supreme Court and to mobilize them to vote for politicians who will protect reproductive rights.”

Karin Housley: GOP Senate Candidate in Minnesota

  • On Kavanaugh:  “I think he was a very good choice.”
  • On Roe: Housley has rubber stamped the anti-abortion agenda, cosponsoring legislation like license plate bill to funnel money to bogus crisis pregnancy centers and a voting for a variety of unnecessary and onerous restrictions on abortion access.
