What National Attacks on Abortion Mean for North Dakota
The Threat to Safe, Legal Abortion
The U.S. Supreme Court announced it will review Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This will be the first direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, the decision that established the constitutional right to have an abortion, since Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation. By taking this case, the Court will be revisiting nearly 50 years of precedent that has protected people’s access to safe and legal abortion in North Dakota.
Also this year, Texas passed S.B. 8, the most extreme abortion ban in our country’s history. The law essentially eliminates access to safe, legal abortion in Texas and paves the way for other states and municipalities to do the same.
What does this mean for abortion access in North Dakota?
While abortion is still legal today, Texas is showing us what the future of abortion could quickly become. Our state could be the next to ban abortion.
North Dakota also has a “trigger law” that will immediately outlaw abortion in our state if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
Abortion access is fundamental to health equity.
Attacks on abortion access disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), those with low incomes, and those living in rural areas. People with means will always be able to overcome unnecessary barriers to access abortion, but all people should have access to the health care they need.
