MoLeg Update

Expanding Access to Health Care for New Moms: Last week, the House Committee on Health and Mental Health Policy rolled four bills into one and unanimously passed House Committee Substitute for House Bills 2280, 2120, 1468 and 1616. This new bill is a modest but important policy change. Currently, low-income pregnant people receive health care coverage through MO HealthNet (Missouri’s Medicaid program) during pregnancy through 60 days after giving birth. HCS HBs 2280, 2120, 1468 and 1616 will expand MO HealthNet coverage for one year after giving birth to new moms who receive substance use treatment within 60 days of giving birth. This is a great example of lawmakers working across party lines to advance a policy which improves maternal and infant health.

Equal Rights Amendment: On Tuesday, Planned Parenthood Advocates in Missouri joined many citizens and organizations to testify in support of Sen. Jill Schupp’s SCR 41, which would ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in Missouri. The ERA would amend the U.S. Constitution to add, “the equality of rights shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.” This would be an important tool to fight for “equality in pay, job opportunities, political structure, education, and health care (including reproductive health care)—in particular for women of color, women with disabilities and the LGBTQIA+ community...” Missouri would be the 38th state to ratify the ERA.

Local Progress: Health Center Safety Bill Advances

By a vote of 15-13, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen gave first-round approval to Board Bill 34, the Health Center Safety Bill. Board Bill 34 is a common-sense measure that will improve the safety of patients, providers, volunteers, and staff at health centers in St. Louis City, including the Planned Parenthood health center on Forest Park Ave. The bill creates an eight-foot buffer zone around the driveway, preventing protesters from impeding access. This buffer zone will decrease the likelihood of vehicle traffic backing up onto the street and causing a collision. Planned Parenthood supports First Amendment rights, and BB 34 protects those rights while allowing those entering and exiting health centers a safe path to do so. The bill awaits final approval from the Board of Aldermen before going to the mayor’s desk.

St. Louis City residents: take action and encourage your alderperson to pass BB 34!

Stand With Planned Parenthood in Your Community

Recap: Working People’s Day of Action

On Saturday, February 24th Planned Parenthood patient, supporter and high school student Macy Blustein spoke at at the Working People’s Day of Action rally in St. Louis on the steps of the Old Courthouse. Speakers demanded an end to economic inequality and stood up for the freedom of working people to join together and unionize. As Macy noted, a union card is one of the best ways to fight discrimination in the workplace, especially important for women of color, who experience gender and race discrimination at the same time.

The Working People’s Day of Action took place in over 25 states across the country to demonstrate support for unions and the benefits that workers have gained because of unions. Today, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME, a historic case that will impact working people’s freedom to join together fight for decent and equitable pay, affordable health care, quality schools, vibrant communities and a secure future for all of us.
