MoLeg Weekly Wrap-Up

On Tuesday, Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes President and CEO Laura McQuade visited Jefferson City and attended a press conference with human rights coalition partners including the NAACP of Missouri, Empower Missouri, PROMO, Missouri Faith Voices, and the Missouri AFL-CIO. In light of bills that could peel back human rights protections for Missourians, the coalition came together to demand representation. "Access to health care is a human right," McQuade said.

Later that day, the House Children and Families committee heard four anti-reproductive health bills. Two bills, HB 757 and HB 908 would ban abortion after 22 weeks and impose new reporting requirements and penalties on doctors who provide abortion. Also heard were HB 194, which would prohibit fetal tissue donation and would add additional penalties for providers, and HB 182, which would try to mandate good family communication. The hearings included two comparisons to the Dred Scott case and clinic protester comparing medical research to Nazism.

On Wednesday, Rep. Mike Moon (R-157, Ash Grove) continued with his absurdity and offensiveness by filing HB 1014. The bill, which he calls the “Never Again Act,” would require an abortion history display in the Capitol. In a press statement, Rep. Moon invoked both slavery and the Holocaust to defend his bill. Sen. Jill Schupp (D-24, St. Louis County), said Rep. Moon’s comparisons are “unconscionable... A woman’s access to reproductive rights has nothing to do with the tragedy and travesty of the Holocaust.”

Planned Parenthood's Capitol Hill Takeover

Planned Parenthood Great Plains and Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri patients, clinicians, and public affairs staff showed up on Capitol Hill in force on Wednesday, March 1 to tell the Missouri Congressional delegation to vote no on any attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. Team Missouri met with the offices of U.S. Sens. Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt as well as Reps. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO 5), Ann Wagner (R-MO 2), Lacy Clay (D-MO 1), and Billy Long (R-MO 7). We spoke truth to power, told moving patient and provider stories, and made our joint statewide presence felt at the Capitol!
