MoLeg Special Session Wrap-Up

After more than six weeks of an expensive and unnecessary special session, the Missouri Legislature voted to send Senate Bill 5 to Gov. Eric Greitens, who signed the bill into law on Wed. Senate Bill 5 is a deliberate attempt to skirt the constitutional rights of Missourians to access abortion.

“Missouri’s abortion laws are already some of the most restrictive in the nation. Federal courts have blocked some of those medically unnecessary restrictions,” said M’Evie Mead, Planned Parenthood Advocates in Missouri Director of Policy and Organizing. “The notion that this session has any benefit for patients’ health and safety is nonsense, and Missourians are smart enough to know that.”

SB 5 is a TRAP law. TRAP laws are red tape.

Gov. Eric Greitens says he wants to cut red tape. Nevertheless, he eagerly signed 30+ pages of new red tape in Senate Bill 5, a targeted regulation of abortion providers (TRAP) law. TRAP laws are dangerous and deceptive measures designed to sound like reasonable efforts to protect patients, but they are actually medically unnecessary and only serve to make it more difficult for a woman to access safe, legal abortion.

Senate Bill 5's 30+ pages of TRAP laws are the definition of red tape. They will increase the unnecessary burden on Missourians, while doing nothing to protect their health or safety.

Senate Bill 5 will add to the extensive web of TRAP laws that has left Missouri women who seek safe, legal abortion with just one provider in the entire state. Tell Gov. Greitens: Want #NoMoRedTape? Then #NoMoTRAPLaws!

Trumpcare Defeated! 🎉

Trumpcare would have blocked millions of people who rely on Medicaid from coming to Planned Parenthood for preventive care, increased premiums by 20 percent, and taken away health insurance from tens of millions of Americans.

But YOU — Planned Parenthood supporters — launched a vocal, persistent opposition to Trumpcare. From Day One, an army of pink-clad Planned Parenthood patients, supporters, and advocates fought like hell and defeated the bill.

Here are some of the ways you helped stop Trumpcare in its tracks:

  • You made more than 200,000 phone calls to members of Congress.

  • You organized more than 2,200 events across the country, including rallies, petition drops, phone banks, and marches.

  • You delivered over one million petition signatures to members of Congress in opposition to  “defunding” Planned Parenthood.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Missouri Planned Parenthood CEOs on the Air

This month, the CEOs of both Missouri Planned Parenthood affiliates appeared on their local NPR stations.

Planned Parenthood Great Plains President and CEO Laura McQuade appeared on KCUR’s Statehouse Blend program, to discuss the state Legislature’s special session and plans to expand access to abortion in Missouri. McQuade explained that Senate Bill 5 “is not about [patient] health & safety. This is about preventing access to safe and legal abortion.”

Later in the week, Mary M. Kogut, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri, was a guest on St. Louis on the Air. She joined St. Louis Public Radio’s Don Marsh and NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri’s Kirstin Palovick to explain how Senate Bill 5 will impact access to safe, legal abortion in Missouri.

Stand With Planned Parenthood in Your Community

Recap: #PeoplesSessionSTL

On Saturday, July 29, a coalition of St. Louisans expressed their outrage that Gov. Greitens has continued to prioritize the anti-abortion movement’s agenda over his constituents needs. Gov. Greitens cut the wages of thousands of St. Louisans, as they struggle to pay rent, put food on the table, and afford basic necessities. There are neighborhoods in Missouri with an infant mortality rate worse than some developing countries, and black women in Missouri are four times more likely to experience pregnancy-related complications, regardless of wealth and education. Missourians have had enough!
