Planned Parenthood PA Reacts to Texas Decision on Medication Abortion
For Immediate Release: April 8, 2023 (Updated: April 7, 2023, 12:35 a.m.)
(Harrisburg, Pa.) --- Planned Parenthood PA Advocates Executive Director Signe Espinoza made the following statement in response to the decision in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine et al v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration et al which has sought to limit access to the safe, popular and FDA approved medication abortion drug, mifepristone.
“The attacks on our right to abortion care will never end.
We know the vast majority of Americans, as many as 8 in 10, want abortion to be legal. When our right to abortion was threatened after the fall of Roe v Wade, we went to the polls and elected a pro-sexual and reproductive health governor and state house here in Pennsylvania, but also around the country.
We have been very clear: abortion should be legal and accessible, whether it is performed in-clinic or by medication.
We have used our voices and our votes to share that message with our leaders, over and over again, but the anti abortion extremists continue to ignore our will.
This case was intentionally launched in the courtroom of a politically appointed, not elected, judge with a record of infringing on our rights.
This is disappointing and it is undeniably a setback in access to essential health care, but Planned Parenthood will not stop fighting for your ability to get the care you need. We will not go back.”
Mifepristone was first approved by the FDA more than 20 years ago and has since been used by more than 5 million people to safely end pregnancy. It is a highly effective, safe method and can be prescribed remotely, which was critical during COVID restrictions and closures.
Medication abortion is a popular option for people to make their own private medical decision, expands access to care – particularly as most Pennsylvanians do not reside in a county with a clinic that provides abortion care.
