House Bill 1001 Charges Doctors Performing Abortions with Felony Murder

Feb. 17, 2020

Abortion ban HB 1001 dropped this week. This full ban would charge a physician providing an abortion with felony murder. It also increases the current penalties for providing information related to abortion to possessing instructions on how to self terminate to a felony. This is a reintroduction of a bill introduced by Rep. Eubanks last year, and the bill did not move. The bill has been assigned to House Health, which has a particularly hostile Chair who pushed the six week ban through last year.

Leading Progressive Organizations in Mississippi Oppose ‘Reason Bans’ that Restrict Abortion Based on the Reason for Ending a Pregnancy

Jackson — State lawmakers in Mississippi are seeking to pass more extreme abortion legislation that targets specific populations of women by banning abortion on the basis of gender, race, or genetic anomaly. House Bill 1295, also known as the “Reason Ban” would eliminate access to some early abortions in the state based on the results of prenatal genetic testing. It is the latest attempt by Republican lawmakers in the state to attack Mississippians’ reproductive freedom.

Senate Bill 2813 is an exciting piece of proactive legislation that was introduced by Legislative Black Caucus Chair Sen. Angela Turner-Ford. This bill would extend postpartum Medicaid coverage to 12 months for new mothers. This could help drastically reduce Mississippi’s dismal maternal mortality rate.

House Bill 0627 is a Near-total Ban on Abortion in the State of Mississippi

House Bill 0504 Targets Abortion Facilities

HB 0504 prohibits selling stem cells derived from human embryo or fetus that was destroyed. No movement is expected on this bill since selling stem cells is already illegal in the U.S.

House Bill 0577: Could Target Abortion by Increasing Penalties for "Harming Pregnant Women"

House Bill 0577 is an amendment to a current law which criminalizes the intentional injury of pregnant women.  HB 0577 would increase these penalties, but also adds in additional confusing language that could potentially target abortion providers and patients.

House Bill 0542, would require insurers, Medicaid and the State Health Plan to cover birth control without cost sharing.  Eliminating co-pays on birth control has been proven to reduce the rates of unintended pregnancies nationally. Removing the financial barriers that exist for patients is key to ensuring that everyone can access the full spectrum of reproductive health care, regardless of their pay bracket.
