Get Real is a medically-accurate and age-appropriate sex education curriculum for students in grades 6, 7, 8. The curriculum is designed to delay sex through supporting, valuing, and respecting adolescents' right to their own healthy decisions about sex.
The curriculum achieves this goal through the following methods:
Talking openly and honestly about sexuality without stigmatizing, shaming, or fear tactics.
Get Real offers factual, medically-accurate, age-appropriate information about the benefits of choosing not to engage in any sexual behaviors that can result in pregnancy or STIs.
Focusing on relationship-building as an important factor towards making healthy choices.
In addition to learning the facts about sex and sexuality, the curriculum empowers young people to learn communication, listening, and negotation skills and actually apply those skills to real-life decision-making situations.
Supporting parents and/or other caring adults as the leading sexuality educators of their children.
Young people want to talk with their parents or other caring adults about sex and sexuality. Get Real provides activities that give caring adults the tools they need to start conversations at home.
Creating an inclusive environment.
Educators create an inclusive environment for students of all cultures, backgrounds, identities and experiences.
Get Real is Comprehensive Sex Education that Works.
Get Real is among only 44 programs in the country included on Department of Health and Human Services' list of evidence-based programs. Among students who were taught Get Real, 16% fewer boys and 15% fewer girls had sex. Designed by Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, the program has been adopted by over 325 schools and out-of-school-time programs in 25 different states.
