July 12, 2018 (Des Moines, IA) – Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa PAC (PPVI PAC) endorsed Fred Hubbell for Governor of Iowa during a press conference highlighting his decades-long commitment to women’s health, reproductive rights, and Planned Parenthood.

“We are pleased to announce our endorsement of Fred Hubbell, who has stood with Iowa women and supported Planned Parenthood in Iowa for more than 30 years,” said Erin Davison-Rippey, state executive director of Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa PAC. “From chairing Planned Parenthood’s board in the 1980s, to helping open a health center in Dubuque, Fred has been a champion for access to reproductive and sexual health. As the next Governor of Iowa, Fred will work to restore funding for family planning services, fix the Medicaid crisis, and put an end to the unconstitutional attacks on Iowans’ right to access safe, legal abortion.”

A longtime supporter of Planned Parenthood, Hubbell served on Planned Parenthood of Mid-Iowa’s Board of Directors from 1982-1987 and on the organization’s Foundation Board from 1985-1992. As chair of the board in 1984, he led the search committee that hired longtime President/CEO Jill June. Additionally, he and his wife Charlotte also helped Planned Parenthood overcome barriers to open a new health center in Dubuque in 2011.

During today’s press event, generations of Planned Parenthood leadership highlighted the endless adversity the organization has faced, but particularly the escalated attacks following the 2016 elections:  the Trump administration’s attempts to pull Medicaid, Title X and grant funding, and fill up the federal court system with appointees who are expressly opposed to abortion rights – including Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

At the state level, since 2016 Iowa has dismantled the Iowa Family Planning Network waiver – forcing Planned Parenthood to close four health centers and stripping 14,600 Iowans of their health care – and passed a series of anti-abortion laws, culminating in the extreme 6-week abortion ban.

“Ultimately, we know that Planned Parenthood is not here for politics. Planned Parenthood is here for patients,” said Cecile Richards, former president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “But as long as there are elected officials trying to put up roadblocks every step of the way against birth control, cancer screenings, LGBT care, and safe, legal abortion, we must take to the polls to elect true leaders who will put a stop to the attacks on our rights. Iowa – perhaps more than any other state right now – needs a governor who will be a champion for Planned Parenthood, for reproductive rights, and for women. Iowa needs Fred Hubbell.”

Throughout his campaign, Hubbell has put Planned Parenthood and health care front and center, vowing from day one in office to work to restore the Iowa Family Planning Network Waiver, protect abortion access, and fix Iowa’s health crises.

“For over thirty years, my wife and I have been committed to Planned Parenthood and the vital health care services and education they provide for Iowa women, men, and LGBTQ individuals,” said Fred Hubbell. “No state in the country has faced a graver threat to women’s access to quality, affordable health care. From the most extreme anti-women’s health care law in the country to the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the privatization of Medicaid, Iowa women now face greatly reduced access to care. By working together, we can end these attacks and get our state back to supporting the health of all Iowans.”'
