July 10, 2018 (Des Moines, IA) – Iowans will rally outside the offices of Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst on Sunday afternoon in response to President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court last night.

President Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to see Roe v. Wade overturned, and his nomination of Judge Kavanaugh solidifies that position. At the same time, the President has stated his belief that he can pardon himself, an issue that could come before the court. In addition, Kavanaugh has already received widespread criticism as an elite who will rule on the side of the wealthy and powerful, attacking the rights of workers and women, dismantling health care protections for people with pre-existing conditions and shifting support from public schools to private, religious and for-profit schools.

“The fundamental right to access a safe, legal abortion in this country is on the line,” said Erin Davison-Rippey, state executive director of Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa. “The idea of Trump having his choice to fill another Supreme Court vacancy is terrifying for not only abortion rights, but for our ability to live free from discrimination in this country. We call on the Senate to reject Brett Kavanaugh and any nominee who would strip people's individual rights and freedoms.”

“President Trump wants to take our country back to the Stone Age,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “He wants to rip away women’s rights, turn the court over to a majority who will rule on behalf of the wealthy and powerful, and at the same time protect himself from the obstruction and collusion investigation he’s facing. Iowans want to send a message to the President: women deserve better, and crooks don’t get to pick their own judge. We believe in equality and the rule of law in this state and country, and we’re ready to stand up against Trump’s Supreme Court.”

Recent polling demonstrates that Americans want the Senate to reject a nominee who would overturn Roe v. Wade, and that a majority believes the President should not be able to make this nomination while under investigation for obstruction of justice and collusion with a foreign government. Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa and Progress Iowa will host the rally in collaboration with area grassroots and community organizations.
