In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court stole our federal constitutional right to abortion. Overnight, millions of people lost their most fundamental freedoms as politicians and judges across the country moved to eliminate access to abortion care and ban abortion outright.

Yet in Connecticut, where the right to abortion remains protected, our champions continue to fight for abortion access — and win. Last year, we passed the most significant abortion rights legislation in a generation, expanding access to abortion and establishing protections for abortion patients and providers even as other states waged an all-out assault on reproductive freedom.

We are living in a post-Roe America, which means there’s more work to do. The Reproductive Rights Caucus in the Connecticut General Assembly announced the bills they’re introducing during the 2023 legislative session; together with our champions and our community partners, we are fighting for policies that will:

  • Expand the HUSKY Medicaid program to all income-eligible residents — regardless of immigration status — to help Connecticut families get the care they need
  • Increase abortion access through funding for patients and providers; training programs for abortion care; and by expanding availability for medication abortion at state colleges and universities
  • Strengthen protections for abortion patients and providers by building on last year’s win, the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act
  • Work towards Doula certification and reimbursement through Medicaid and private insurance to make Doula care more accessible
  • Ensure continued investment in sexual and reproductive health care services and increase Medicaid reimbursement rates to support community health providers
  • Achieve more inclusive access to fertility treatments and services, especially for the LGBTQ+ community and single people
  • Regulate health care access in correctional facilities and advance the priorities of the Endometriosis Working Group

And, we continue to support the work of our coalition partners to build a more equitable Connecticut; address economic inequity and housing insecurity; expand voting rights; address sexual violence and protect victims of sexual assault; and fight for racial justice, LGBTQ+ equality, immigrants’ rights, and more.
