FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, October 25, 2018

New Haven, CT) – Planned Parenthood Votes! Connecticut (PPV!CT) has endorsed the Democratic slate of candidates for constitutional offices in Connecticut in the 2018 election cycle. Planned Parenthood Votes! Connecticut is committed to supporting and endorsing pro-reproductive rights, pro-family planning candidates for state office.

“Our endorsed statewide candidates are leaders who will fight for reproductive health, rights, and access, including access to safe, legal abortion, from the increasing attacks by the Trump-Pence administration and Congress,” said Chris Corcoran, Chair of Planned Parenthood Votes! Connecticut (PPV!CT).

Corcoran noted that, since taking office, the Trump-Pence administration has pushed policy after policy meant to strip us of our basic reproductive health care and rights—taking away the rights of people of color, LGBTQ people, and women. As recently as this week, the Trump administration has threatened a dramatic government-wide move to erase civil rights protections for transgender people, by narrowly defining gender identity, based on a person’s assigned sex at birth. And the US Department of Health and Human Services under President Trump is poised to promulgate a “gag rule” on the Title X national family planning program.

By electing these statewide candidates, Connecticut will continue to demonstrate its leadership in the movement for reproductive freedom. Ned Lamont, Susan Bysiewicz, William Tong, Denise Merrill, Shawn Wooden and Kevin Lembo will make reproductive health and rights a priority when they’re elected and will support policies that impact Planned Parenthood patients and will ensure equity and bodily autonomy for all Connecticut residents.

“In particular, PPV!CT calls attention to the crucial role of the state Attorney General in protecting the rights of Connecticut citizens,” said Susan Yolen, PPV!CT Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy. “We know that William Tong understands what’s at stake, and, if elected Attorney General, he will preserve our state laws and defend us from harmful federal policies,” she said. Connecticut is one of the states that has codified the holdings of Roe v Wade in the event that the US Supreme Court were to reverse or erode that landmark ruling securing safe, legal abortion.

“We are committed to supporting candidates who will protect providers of family planning and abortion, like Planned Parenthood, from the current threats from Washington, DC.”
