43 Bipartisan Senators Introduce Legislation Supporting Women’s Reproductive Rights and International Family Planning

Anchorage, AK — Statement from Jessica Cler, Alaska Public Affairs Manager:

"Following Monday’s executive order from President Trump to reinstate the global gag rule, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), signed on with a group of 43 bipartisan senators to introduce the Global Health, Empowerment, and Rights (HER) Act, which would permanently repeal the harmful policy. We applaud Senator Murkowski, for putting the rights of women above partisan politics. The global gag rule will cause clinic closures around the world, resulting in more unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion, not less. The world’s most vulnerable women will suffer as a direct result of this policy, which threatens to undermine years of efforts to improve women’s health worldwide. Politicians should not stand between a woman and her doctor, neither here in the U.S. nor anywhere else in the world. We commend Senator Murkowski for standing up for women and against extreme policies that take women backwards, and hope she continues to move forward in this direction as an ally for women at home and abroad.”
