Washington, DC — Today in the United States Senate, extremist politicians continued their attack on women’s health care by attempting to pass legislation that would ban abortion at 20 weeks. Opposition from Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) helped to defeat this dangerous legislation.
“We applaud Senator Murkowski for her vote today in favor of women, families, science, and access to health care. This bill would take decision-making away from patients and their trusted medical care providers and put it in the hands of politicians,” said Jessica Cler, Alaska Public Affairs Manager at Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii. “This one-size-fits-all ban leaves women in potentially vulnerable and dangerous positions, and does nothing to protect their health. The Senate’s vote today is part of a broader agenda to ban abortion completely, and is deeply unpopular with the majority of Americans. Thank you, Senator Murkowski for not putting women’s lives at risk to score political points through these dangerous measures.”
A 20-week ban is a clear attempt to erode Roe v. Wade. In fact, 20-week ban proponents are outspoken about their goal to challenge the 1973 Supreme Court decision protecting a woman’s right to safe and legal abortion. Support for Roe v. Wade is at the highest it’s ever been, with 7 out of 10 Americans saying they believe a woman should have the right to safe, legal abortion. When Americans understand the real-world impact of 20-week bans, 60 percent of voters oppose them.
