West Virginia lawmakers are attempting to strip advanced practice clinicians -- like your physician's assistant or nurse practitioner -- from providing common gynecological care safely and legally. Abortion is extremely safe, and this bill, HB 2801, would only limit the ability of qualified medical professionals to provide safe, legal abortion.
By restricting who can provide safe and legal abortion to only physicians, politicians are chipping away, yet again, at West Virginia women’s access to the full range of reproductive healthcare.

Advanced practice clinicians (APCs) already provide common gynecological care such as IUD insertions, cervical biopsies, miscarriage management, and labor and delivery -- as well as abortion. Mounting scientific evidence shows abortion is one of the safest medical procedures and peer-reviewed studies like the one recently published in the American Journal of Public Health prove APCs are more than qualified to provide this care.
If this bill becomes law, patients will have fewer options in terms of hours and days during which abortion services would be available. As just one example, for a woman who works an hourly wage job it can be extremely difficult to access care when it is only limited to certain days and times. This creates a world where access to health care depends on where you live or how much money you make.
This is just one of many attempts in recent years to restrict access to abortion for the women of the Mountain State. The Supreme Court was clear in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt -- restrictions that are medically unnecessary and burden women are unconstitutional. We will not stop fighting to prevent laws that block a woman’s right to control her own body, life, and future.
