Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of comprehensive sex education in our communities and works with federal and state governments to ensure access to sex education programs. Federal programs, such as the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI), utilize evidence-based training when teaching teens about the importance of healthy sex practices and pregnancy prevention. According to research by Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) regarding opinions about TPPI, a majority of the public, including parents, teens and voters from across the political spectrum support comprehensive sex education.
Additionally, the first state-grant sex education program, Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP), provides $55 million for sex education programs. PREP teaches teens about pregnancy prevention, as well as how to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs), protect their health, make responsible decisions and learn critical skills needed to form healthy relationships.
While 15 Planned Parenthood affiliates utilize TPPI and 26 utilize PREP, we will continue to work with lawmakers and advocates of sex education until these programs expand to all of our affiliates, including the South Atlantic.
