On Tuesday, January 30, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a public hearing at 11 a.m. in Gressette Building Room 105 for S. 217, the Personhood Act of SCThis extreme bill would require that South Carolina law define life as beginning at the moment of conception and would give fertilized eggs the same legal rights and constitutional protections as all people in South Carolina. S. 217 amounts to an outright ban on safe, legal abortion -- no exceptions. It also threatens access to infertility treatment, miscarriage management and many common and effective forms of birth control.

Planned Parenthood staff will testify at the hearing, and we also strongly encourage Planned Parenthood supporters and volunteers to speak out against the harmful ramifications of this bill. If you plan on attending Tuesday's hearing, please contact Sarah Ingraham at [email protected]

I'm a South Carolina resident and I'm calling to urge you to vote no on Tuesday to the personhood bill. The personhood bill would ban all abortions with no exception for rape, incest or to save the life of the woman. That's unconstitutional. It would also ban most forms of birth control and prevent in vitro fertilization. Women who have miscarriages may be subject to criminal investigation and arrest. Even people who don't like abortion say this bill goes too far. Please vote no.
