Raleigh, N.C. — Today the U.S. Supreme Court prevented a lower court’s decision in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine et al v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration et al that would have severely restricted medication abortion from going into effect. As a result, there is no change to the FDA's approval of mifepristone or its use in abortion care while the case proceeds.

Medication abortion remains legal and available in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic health centers will continue to provide medication abortions with mifepristone.

Statement from Jenny Black, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic:

"Mifepristone is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy, and tonight this option for abortion care remains available to people across Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic health centers will continue to provide this quality, compassionate health care.

We are relieved to be able to offer our patients the most effective option for medication abortion care, but it never should have come this close to being completely taken off the market. People across the country need to wake up to what is happening here. The hypocrisy of anti-abortion politicians who claimed they wanted abortion access to be a states’ issue is now on full display. Anti-abortion activists did not stop when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and they will not stop here. They will chip away at abortion accessuntil it is totally banned in every state across the country, and they will do that by any means necessary. This isn't the end of this fight.”

Mifepristone was first approved by the FDA more than 20 years ago and has since been used by more than five million people to safely end their pregnancies. It is used in more than half of abortions nationwide and has a safety record of over 99%.
