New Web Ad: Planned Parenthood Votes Hits Cory Gardner for Co-Sponsorship of “Personhood” Bill

“One thing remains clear: Cory Gardner can’t be trusted. That’s why we’ll be working around the clock to make sure Colorado women and families know the high stakes for women’s health and rights this November.”

DENVER, CO — As Cory Gardner attempts again to whitewash his dangerous record on women’s health issues, Planned Parenthood Votes launched a new web ad holding Gardner accountable for his support of the Life at Conception Act (in 2012 and 2013).  Known nationwide as “personhood” legislation, this extreme and dangerous bill could interfere with personal, private, medical decisions relating to birth control, access to fertility treatment and end access to safe and legal abortion in all cases including rape and incest. You can read the bill text here.

In the ad, which will run online across Colorado, the narrator reads: “Meet Congressman Gardner’s new favorite key,” as the camera scans a keyboard and settles on “delete.” The narrator continues, “Congressman Gardner is trying to erase part of his record,” highlighting his support for the Life at Conception Act. The narrator ends with “Congressman Gardner still wants to take medical decisions away from you, and your doctor.”

“Colorado voters won’t be fooled by Cory Gardner’s cynical attempts to whitewash his dangerous record on women’s health issues. When he went to Washington, Gardner continued his long-standing support for extreme measures that would interfere with a woman’s personal medical decisions — including the ‘Life at Conception Act,’ a nationwide so-called ‘personhood’ measure,” said Planned Parenthood Votes Colorado Vice President of Public Affairs, Cathy Alderman.

“One thing remains clear: Cory Gardner can’t be trusted. That’s why we’ll be working around the clock to make sure Colorado women and families know the high stakes for women’s health and rights this November. We know that Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations are a trusted source of information and that women listen to us when we speak out to them about issues that affect their health and rights. We know what it takes to win, and we’re in it for the long run,” said Planned Parenthood Votes Executive Vice President, Dawn Laguens.

“Women are watching and they’ve had enough of politicians like Cory Gardner who want to impose their extreme views on abortion and birth control on everyone else,” continued Laguens.

The ad comes as Representative Cory Gardner continues to whitewash his record and agenda for women’s health and rights in his campaign for the U.S. Senate against women’s health champion Mark Udall. This is part of the Planned Parenthood Votes’ Women are Watching campaign to educate and mobilize women around women’s health in advance of November’s midterm elections.

Cory Gardner’s legislative record is very clear: He supported an all-out ban on safe and legal abortions with very rare exceptions. He has also championed Colorado personhood initiatives not once but twice, both of which were defeated by more than 70 percent of voters, and is the current co-sponsor of a nationwide “Life at Conception Act,” which could interfere with personal, private medical decisions relating to birth control, access to fertility treatment, management of a miscarriage, and end access to safe and legal abortion in all cases including rape and incest.

Indeed, “personhood” is politicians gone too far, and the defeat of “personhood” state constitutional amendments all across the country — from Colorado and Ohio to Mississippi and Oklahoma — sends a clear message: health care decisions should be left to a woman, her family, her doctor, and her faith — not politicians.
