In today’s Quickie: PPAF congratulates repro rights champion Sen. Warnock on reelection and more black men are getting vasectomies, some discuss why.
PLANNED PARENTHOOD ACTION FUND CONGRATULATES SEN. WARNOCK ON REELECTION: Last night, U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock was reelected in the Georgia runoff election, beating his opponent Herschel Walker, an anti-abortion politician who supported a federal abortion ban. Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) celebrates Sen. Warnock’s victory — he has been a reproductive rights champion in the Senate since his initial election in 2021 — and he will now serve for a full six year term.
“By reelecting Sen. Rev. Warnock, Georgians sent a clear message choosing to protect reproductive freedom and our democracy,” PPAF president Alexis McGill Johnson said in a statement. “This victory means that the Senate can continue its support for sexual and reproductive health care and confirm more judges nominated by President Biden without delay. On behalf of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, I congratulate Sen. Rev. Warnock, and look forward to his ongoing leadership in advancing our reproductive health and rights.”

MORE BLACK MEN ARE GETTING VASECTOMIES. ONE MAN SHARES WHY: Yesterday, Word in Black reported that more Black men are embracing vasectomies as a method of pregnancy prevention. Vasectomies are one of the most effective methods of birth control. They also happen to be extremely quick, safe, and successful.
Despite the known benefits of vasectomy, there is a great deal of stigma and misinformation associated with vasectomy procedures. According to Dr. Meera Shah, chief medical officer at Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic, one of the common misconceptions is that vasectomies are 100% reversible. In reality, vasectomy is a permanent sterilization method:
“If you are going into a vasectomy thinking you can reverse it, you are probably not a candidate for vasectomies.”
For people with penises who are seeking a more permanent birth control option, vasectomy is a safe, effective choice. Justin Harlow, a Black man, dentist, husband, and father of 3 young boys, considered it a selfless act to get a vasectomy so that his wife did not have to continue to endure the burden of being the partner responsible for birth control and pregnancy prevention.
