2019 Municipal Achievements

As national politicians attack our health and our rights, we must enact change on the local level. This moment demands local and vocal champions who will implement proactive policies that expand access to health care and help our communities lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

Sex education, skyrocketing rates of sexually transmitted infections, unjust barriers to health care — these are the issues at stake in State Houses and City Halls across the country. That's why the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts endorsed 24 local candidates for city council and school committee in Boston, Springfield, and Worcester.

Our endorsement isn’t just a label – we activated volunteers all over Massachusetts to help elect these local leaders. PPAF supporters knocked doors, made calls, and talked to voters across the state, and those efforts paid off: in the end, 75% of our endorsed candidates won their seats.

The 2019 Boston City Council election ushered in a new era in the city’s history: for the first time, women make up a majority on the council, with 8 of the 13 council seats now held by women. Not only that, Boston voters elected the most diverse council in Boston’s history.

We’re proud to partner with all our endorsed candidates to achieve true reproductive freedom across our state. Check out our endorsed winners in 2019 municipal elections in Springfield, Worcester, and Boston and sign up to volunteer below. Next up: 2020 elections!
