Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts applauds Governor Healey’s executive order to strengthen medication abortion access and provider protections

BOSTON – Today, Governor Maura Healey announced that her Administration will award funding to reproductive health care organizations, including Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, to purchase mifepristone, a medication used for most medication abortions, miscarriage management, and other pregnancy-related care. She also issued an executive order to strengthen protections for reproductive health care providers who prescribe mifepristone.  

“By proactively helping reproductive health organizations purchase mifepristone and strengthening provider protections, Governor Healey is continuing to show reproductive health care providers and anyone who might seek abortion care in Massachusetts that she has their backs,” said Ellen Frank, interim president and CEO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. “Medication abortion is safe, effective, and common and we’re grateful for the Healey Administration’s strong support to protect and expand access to this essential health care.”  

“These actions will directly help patients and providers by giving us the resources and the confidence to continue providing the most effective, evidence-based regimen for medication abortion and miscarriage management,” said Dr. Danielle Roncari, Vice President of Medical Services at Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. “It’s outrageous that the threat of one judge’s decision has forced providers to worry about losing the ability to prescribe a medication that has a 99% safety record, decades of evidenced-based research affirming its safety and efficacy, and that patients rely on every day. Protecting and expanding access to medication abortion is essential to ensuring reproductive freedom, so we are proud that Massachusetts continues to lead by example.”  

Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts is the state’s leading provider of abortion care. Last year, more than 5,000 people came to PPLM for medication abortion care, either in-clinic or via telehealth.
