(Portland, MAINE) – During the first full legislative session since the U.S. Supreme Court revoked federal protections for abortion, 95 Maine state lawmakers earned 100% voting records from Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund.

Seventy-four Representatives and 21 Senators voted to pass five key bills that protect and expand access to abortion in Maine, including one that made Maine the first state in the nation to address abortion later in pregnancy post-Dobbs. Those same lawmakers also voted down four of the most harmful bills aimed at restricting access during the 131st legislative session.

In November 2022, Mainers turned out in record numbers to elect reproductive rights champions to represent them in Augusta, and those legislators listened to their constituents, healthcare providers, faith leaders, researchers and patient advocates in passing laws that protect patients and the clinicians who care for them.

Abortion continues to be a winning issue for candidates and campaigns, evidenced most recently by this month’s elections, where a majority of voters in Ohio cast ballots to enshrine abortion rights into their state’s constitution and where voters in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Virginia elected pro-reproductive rights leaders to key statewide offices.

Every seat in Maine’s legislature is up for election in November 2024.

Statement from Lisa Margulies, Esq., Vice President of Public Affairs, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund:

“We are grateful for lawmakers who voted to protect and expand access to abortion and related care this past legislative session. With federal protections for abortion gone, these elected leaders met the moment with action.

Maine can be proud to be leading the nation in passing compassionate, evidence-based policy that fundamentally protects the right to make private, deeply personal medical decisions without political interference.

Voters across the country, in election after election, have made their voices heard by electing candidates who support reproductive freedom and rejecting harmful rhetoric and disinformation from candidates and campaigns who want to take away our rights. Every time voters can weigh in on reproductive rights, reproductive rights win.

We look forward to working with lawmakers to continue protecting and expanding access to abortion and related care in the next legislative session. Every Maine lawmaker will be up for re-election next year, and voters will be looking for reproductive rights champions to continue to move Maine forward.”
