Austin, TX  — Amid ongoing attacks on sexual and reproductive rights, Planned Parenthood Texas Votes released the following statement on the opening day of the 88th Texas Legislative session.

Statement of Drucilla Tigner, Deputy Director, Planned Parenthood Texas Votes

"In the aftermath of the Supreme Court ending our long-held right to abortion, the 88th Texas Legislature opens with a majority of its members supporting Texas' unpopular abortion bans. For years, Texas politicians with extreme anti-abortion views have chipped away at our rights and enacted unpopular restrictions on sexual and reproductive health care resulting in the health care crisis where we now find ourselves.

Today, Texans are being forced to travel hundreds of miles out of state or remain pregnant against their will. Providers are afraid to treat patients, even in emergencies, due to fears of criminal prosecution. Out-of-touch legislators returning to the Capital today continue to ignore the people's will. They are poised to resume their attacks on reproductive rights, with devastating impacts falling disproportionately on LGBTQ individuals, communities of color, young people, and the disabled.

Planned Parenthood Texas Votes stands ready to hold the creators of this crisis accountable. We remain committed to fighting against attacks on our freedoms and won't stop until every Texan can access the care and resources they deserve.”
