STATE OF ABORTION IN NORTH CAROLINA
To Protect Abortion in November:
Cheri Beasley (D)
Beasley is an unwavering advocate for reproductive health and rights in North Carolina — and promises to fight abortion bans and protect and expand access to care.
As a former Chief Justice of the [North Carolina] Supreme Court, I know that access to reproductive freedom is a constitutional right. … I will always be committed to fighting for our rights in the U.S. Senate.
Cheri Beasley, 6/24/2022
-
Beasley understands that with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to take away our federal constitutional protection for abortion, Congress must restore and protect abortion rights so people can get the safe, legal, and affordable health care they need — no matter where they live.
-
Beasley supports the Women’s Health Protection Act, a federal law that would protect the right to abortion. “I’m going to make sure to fight hard that we codify Roe v. Wade [so] women in North Carolina and all across this country have access and are able to make reproductive health decisions for their families,” Beasley has said.
-
As a member of the Senate, Beasley would also vote to repeal the Hyde Amendment, which penalizes abortion patients with low incomes.
Ted Budd (R)
Budd wants a near-total ban on abortion with no exceptions — both in North Carolina and across the United States.
Voting to ban abortions after 20 weeks and defunding Planned Parenthood are signs of progress, but they're only a start.
Ted Budd, 1/22/2018
-
As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Budd co-sponsored a slew of proposed bans and restrictions on abortion — including a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, a bill requiring medically unnecessary ultrasounds, and federal legislation that would not only criminalize abortion but could also ban some forms of contraception.
-
Budd opposes exceptions to abortion bans in cases of rape or incest — or even to save the life of a pregnant person.
-
“I am 100% ‘pro-life,’” says Budd. In a tweet, Budd condemned legislation to protect the right to abortion in federal law as “disgusting.”
