STATE OF ABORTION IN PENNSYLVANIA
To Protect Abortion in November:
Josh Shapiro (D)
As Pennsylvania’s attorney general, Shapiro has defended abortion rights.
I will stand firm in protecting a woman’s right to choose.
Josh Shapiro, 6/24/2022
-
As attorney general, Shapiro took on the Trump administration in federal court to protect access to reproductive health care — fighting to block a gag rule that attempted to block providers from informing patients about the full range of health options, including abortion.
-
Shapiro went to court to fight the Trump administration when it tried to eliminate guaranteed access to birth control under the Affordable Care Act. “Women need contraception for their health,” he said, “because contraception is medicine, pure and simple.”
-
If elected governor, Shapiro promises to fight against attacks on abortion by state anti-abortion rights lawmakers — pledging to veto any bills that would ban abortion.
Doug Mastriano (R)
An extremist who has compared abortion to the Holocaust, Mastriano says that banning abortion is his “number-one issue.”
It’s not your body. It’s someone else’s body.
Doug Mastriano, 3/31/2022
-
In the state Senate, Mastriano is the lead sponsor of legislation to ban abortion in Pennsylvania at approximately six weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions.
-
Mastriano celebrated the news that the U.S. Supreme Court had taken away the federal constitutional right to abortion — saying that Roe v. Wade “is rightly relegated to the ash heap of history.”
-
“My goal,” Mastriano said in a May 2022 radio interview, “is to get it [an abortion ban] down to conception in the end.” In other words, Mastriano wants to ban all abortion in Pennsylvania.
John Fetterman (D)
Elected lieutenant governor in 2018, Fetterman has proven time and again that he’ll protect access to safe, affordable sexual and reproductive health care — including abortion.
The right to an abortion is non-negotiable … when I’m your next U.S. Senator, I will vote to eliminate the filibuster and protect the right to an abortion.
John Fetterman, 7/1/2022
-
Fetterman, who is running to replace anti-abortion rights politician Sen. Pat Toomey, promises to vote to protect abortion rights with a federal law — making his election pivotal to the restoration of access to abortion nationwide.
-
As lieutenant governor, Fetterman joined Gov. Tom Wolf as a critical line of defense against attacks on abortion rights — opposing measures such as a telemedicine bill that was written to limit access to medication abortion.
-
After Roe v. Wade was overturned, Fetterman denounced a move by anti-abortion rights lawmakers to amend the Pennsylvania constitution in order to ban abortion, calling the effort “an assault on women.” [Twitter, 7/8/22]
Mehmet Oz (R)
Anti-abortion rights politicians are counting on Oz to help pass a national abortion ban.
The left’s stance on abortion has become more absurd each year. I am 100% Pro-Life and I believe life starts at conception.
Mehmet Oz, 4/28/2022
-
In the Senate, Oz says he would “be a leading pro-life medical voice” and would oppose efforts to protect the right to abortion in federal law.
-
Oz cheered when the U.S. Supreme Court took away the federal constitutional right to abortion — describing his mood on the day of the ruling as “relieved.”
-
A resident of New Jersey as recently as 2020 — when he voted absentee there in the presidential election — Oz supports efforts by anti-abortion state lawmakers to restrict access to abortion for Pennsylvanians and throughout the country.
