NEW HAMPSHIRE — Earlier this week, GOP candidate for U.S. Senate Don Bolduc was caught on tape calling the disposal of embryos for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) “disgusting”, and signaling that he is open to the possibility of a national ban on the assisted reproductive technology. When pressed on whether he would ban IVF — a procedure used for decades by millions of families — Bolduc said, “I am not going to say no, right?”

Bolduc’s opposition to a commonplace medical practice that empowers people to start families when they decide to is further evidence that he is too extreme for New Hampshire. It also affirms what Planned Parenthood Votes and other advocates for reproductive freedom have warned: Abortion is just the first step. Don Bolduc will stop at nothing to strip Granite Staters of their fundamental right to bodily autonomy.

Statement from Kayla Montgomery, New Hampshire State Director, Planned Parenthood Votes:

“If, when, and how we start a family is deeply personal. IVF is critical reproductive health care that has helped grow thousands of Granite State families. Don Bolduc’s disparaging comments are deeply out of touch with our state’s values and show his goals go beyond banning abortion:  he wants to control all of our rights and reproductive decisions. In 2019, New Hampshire proudly adopted legislation that eliminated financial barriers for people by ensuring insurance equity for fertility testing and treatment. It passed with robust bipartisan support because it protects Granite Staters’ physical, emotional, and financial health. We know that Sen. Maggie Hassan will protect Granite Staters’ reproductive freedoms, and we must re-elect her this year.”

In 2019, SB 279, a bill to reduce inequity in accessing fertility care, was adopted with broad bipartisan support and reduced significant barriers to parenthood for Granite Staters. The legislation, which had bipartisan cosponsors, requires private insurance companies to cover infertility testing and treatment.
