FORT LAUDERDALE – Today Stephanie Fraim, Chair of the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates, released the following statement in response to the latest wave of DeSantis’ vindictive attacks on Florida’s transgender community and abortion access:

“Planned Parenthood understands that LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive rights are both critical to ensuring our fundamental freedom to control our own bodies and decide what our families look like. It’s no surprise that the same politicians attacking our access to abortion, like Gov. DeSantis, are also attacking access to transgender care.

“Once again, he has inserted himself and his divisive politics where they don’t belong. From our courtrooms and our homerooms to our wombs, DeSantis continues to make Floridians' lives more difficult to further his political agenda.

“Like the abortion ban, book bans and the recent law signed by DeSantis that discriminates against the LGBTQ+ community, these are further attempts to take away Floridians’ freedom to be who we are and access basic information and health care. Rather than controlling their constituents’ bodies, lives, and life paths, Gov. DeSantis and his allies in the Legislature should spend more time controlling skyrocketing housing costs, the pollutants poisoning our land and water, and other issues impacting Floridians’ day to day lives.

“At Planned Parenthood, we are committed to making our state a place where no one faces discrimination or barriers to care because of their gender identity or expression. Transgender Floridians, like everyone else, have a fundamental need for quality health care and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.”

Suspension of State Attorney Andrew Warren

“DeSantis stated yesterday, ‘Our government is a government of laws, not a government of men.’ If DeSantis really believed this, he would have never signed the unconstitutional Florida abortion ban. He is ruling our state as a government of one man and should take his own advice and start governing based on Florida law and not his own personal agenda.”

Florida Board of Medicine meeting

“The so-called ‘standards of care’ being proposed by Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo and his boss Gov. Ron DeSantis are a despicable attack on an already marginalized community that perpetuates stigma and violence, are rooted in anti-science disinformation, and will cost lives.

“There is no medical or factual basis to justify taking health care away from Florida’s transgender population. Politicians must stop fear mongering and putting the lives and well-being of the people they were elected to serve at risk for perceived political gain.”
